What Many Businesses Don’t Know About Gas Utility Charges

If you use enough natural gas, you may have choices of utility rates, in addition to a choice of supplier.

Your utility charges you for distribution services, whether or not you’re buying gas supply from the utility or an alternative supplier. Those charges are complex, they change over time, and they aren’t the same for everyone.

At some point in the past, the utility assigned a rate class based on your usage volume at the time, and other characteristics of your business. This determines your utility charges assessed per month and per unit consumed, plus any surcharges. If one or more of your meters is in the wrong rate class, you could be paying much more than necessary without realizing it.

That’s because the utility leaves it up to you, the customer, to seek out the most favorable rates.

A rate class that once made business sense might not fit anymore, whether a business has grown, or grown leaner. As changes to equipment, facilities, and operations have impacted usage over the years, utility charges and market pricing have evolved—often going in different directions.

Dillon Energy has worked with many businesses like yours to unlock hidden savings potential. We’ve optimized businesses’ rate classes for one or many meters, saving them hundreds or thousands of per year. Please get out your recent utility gas bill and contact us to see what opportunities we can uncover for you.
